Persian Lamb Magic – Creation of Nature’s Masterpiece
Identification and Guide for Selection
by Deborah Y Hunter ©2025
After many requests for a Karakul lamb curls and pattern reference guide, a new book has been written, illustrated and explained from the thousands of photographs I accumulated over years as KSAR Registrar. In this concise guide, more than 160 pictures beautifully clarify the nine traits that create the stunning beauty of Persian lamb, known as Swakara in Africa. Shepherds will be able to embrace the heritage of the only breed in the world that produces lambs of such elegance. Non-shepherds will delight in the extraordinary beauty of Karakul and Swakara lambs.
An exquisite reference book, color photographs galore, makes a lovely gift!
$40 Amazon only, does not include shipping
Exclusively through Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), who has the exclusive rights to content for the first 90 days of publication, November 1, 2025.

The Karakul Handbook–Selecting & Breeding Karakuls for Fur Improvement by Lowry Hagerman ©1951
Because Persian lamb birth coats are the essence of Karakul sheep this is the book for every serious breeder. Lowry Hagerman was the most successful US shepherd to breed for the business of Persian lamb. The deBremond-Hagerman family started with Karakuls in Fall 1911, about 2 1/2 years after CC Young’s first importation. Starting with 100 Karalinc cross ewes and one superlative Karakul ram costing more than a Ford Model T, Hagerman was able to flood the market with thousands of matched pelts for the US Persian lamb fur industry.
Written in the late 1940’s, during the waning years of the industry, it was published just three years before the fur market totally collapsed. This book contains fascinating insight into Hagerman’s breeding and marketing practices that made him the premier breeder of his time, and for decades to come. The Hagerman family had Karakuls until 1996, a total of 85 years, longest to date for the breed.
The Alliance’s Handbooks were exposed to a lot of dust and flies, but they are not moldy. This collection had been stored in Ted Stultz’s barn loft, Fabius, NY, since 1979 when he sold the Empire State Karakul Fur Sheep Registry to Karen Koch. Ted kept some books aside because he had been successful selling them to Animal Science students. After I contacted Ted in February 2019, he shipped 24 copies to the Alliance in Washington state.
Ted Stultz’s Empire State Karakuls were descendants of Hagerman sheep, which ended up with Julia DeVlieg when she bought the registry from Karen Koch.
